As a textile designer, I use clip art. I paint on top of it to give structure to abstract flowers; use it as a guide it for my thick, wet brush marks. But what does it mean when a high-end contemporary designer uses it straight out of the book? Is it edgy because of the blatant cut and paste approach? Is the price you pay for clothing supposed to buy you exclusivity?
I’ve seen these same flowers over and over again through the years; used them for reference and spotted them on t-shirts in the mall. When I look at this Christopher Kane print, all I can see is the banality of these (albeit well drawn) illustrations.
